For these landscape paintings, I put an image on the board of a finished fall landscape painting with red, yellow, and orange background colors, and a silhouetted tree in the foreground (in black). I talked students through the process of creating the background, circulating the room giving tips where necessary (how to blend better, when to add more water, etc.)
After students finished the background, they allowed the paint to dry so they could move on to the tree silhouette. There were tree examples on the board for students to use as reference, but many of them came up with their own designs. The finished paintings you see below are all different ideas based on one reference painting. Students were able to see that there are many ways to produce one concept, and they all walked away with an original painting of their own completed in just 1 hour.
